Winter 2022 Public Speaking & Leadership Course

Five – Week program starting February 23rd

A Youth Leadership and Communication Program featuring effective Public Speaking techniques and leadership lessons in Personal Growth.
Ages 15 - 18 starting February 23rd

In this 5-week Public Speaking and Leadership course students will gain confidence in their public speaking skills by learning speech-making skills and nerve-calming strategies and then putting them to practice each week by preparing and presenting a speech to their peers. Each week students will constructively critique each other to help each other improve! This class has a small size in order to facilitate a more comfortable and productive learning environment for everyone. Students will walk away from this crash course with an increased confidence in public speaking and conversations in general. I hope you’ll join us!

This is what we will cover each week:

Week 1

Learners will introduce themselves to their peers before learning some basic public speaking techniques, confidence boosting skills, as well as strategies to calm their nerves while speaking in public! They will also be introduced to the concept of constructive criticism and learn how to give it and strategies to receive it. They will learn one aspect of leadership, i.e. Self Esteem through the Law of the Mirror. They will be assigned their 1st speech topic to be presented in next week’s class.

Week 2

Learners will begin by presenting their speech they have prepared based on the topic. Students will put the skills they learned in the 1st class to practice. While listening to each others’ speeches, peers will provide constructive criticism they will take into next week’s speech. In addition, students will be introduced to attention grabbing Opening, Body and Conclusion – the 3 parts of a speech, The leadership topic for this week will be Intentionality – Overcoming the 8 Mistake Gaps. New speech topic is introduced for week 3!

Week 3

Students present their speeches, drawing from the skills learned in week 2 as well as the constructive criticism from their peers the week before. This week students will learn about why the way we present a speech, ie Speech Delivery, including Voice Projection and Vocal Variety, is so important as well as how to incorporate more ENTHUSIASM! Students are introduced to week 3’s leadership topic called The Law of Awareness – Know yourself to grow yourself. They will take a 19 question quiz in order to obtain a DISC-Style personality assessment report. They will get the speech topic for Week 4.

Week 4

Students present their speeches, drawing from the skills learned in previous weeks as well as the constructive criticism from their peers. This week students will learn Body Language, Hand Gestures and Facial expressions. Students are introduced to week 4’s leadership topic called The Law of Environment– Growth thrives in Conducive Surroundsing. They will end the course with a speech on a topic of their choosing to showcase what they have learned!

Week 5

In the last session of this course students will present their final speech on a topic of their choosing to show off what they have learned and the confidence they have gained over the past 4 weeks! A final, informal progress report is issued by the faciliator, followed by a fun review quiz, certificate presentation (graduation) and Testimonials, to wrap up! This class will be a 100% judgement-free zone and a comfortable learning environment for even the most shy of learners!

Location Platform : Zoom (video camera sharing mandatory while participants are speaking) – hybrid sessions in the planning for future workshops

About Glynis D'Souza

Glynis is a mentor and a coach to many; her strength lies in empowering followers to become leaders. She conducts Mastermind Courses, Lunch and Learns and Keynote Speeches on Leadership through a variety of formats ranging from virtual classrooms to on-site presentations.

With the high incidence of mental health issues and depression abounding, Glynis is passionate about making a difference in the lives of youth and has conducted several youth leadership programs, and assists junior Gavel Clubs. She currently runs YouthMax, a series of youth leadership camps for youth in the community. Her passion for empowering youth led her to run for Public School Board Trustee in the municipal elections in Ontario in October 2018.
